BALACLAVAS | A NEW GENERATION OF “KINDERGARTENPROOF” HEADWEAR!

Have you ever witnessed a seemingly insignificant idea park into an absolutely powerful new conception? This is exactly how Breden’s unique patent-protected balaclavas were born – a whole generation of innovative headwear!

OK, LET’S MAKE SOME HATS…

I was spending an ordinary playdate with a fellow mom discussing children’s hats. We both agreed that balaclavas were best for kindergarten and so I joked: “Well, maybe I should sew a hat and a scarf together then?” And that’s exactly what happened. But is sure wasn’t easy! I took a deep dive into the world of headwear and soon found out that in addition to unappealing looks and unreasonable prices, most popular and well-trusted kids brands had inconsistent sizing and disappointing materials. Fleece was sweaty, wool was itchy, one-layered cotton didn’t block wind, knitted hats didn’t stay in place… The list is endless!

It became clear to me that even though inventing the world’s best balaclava is an unbearably long, complicated and costly process, it’s also absolutely necessary. So, together with a good friend Elle, who is now Breden’s production master, we came up with the first prototype to be tested on children of different ages and head sizes. This double-cotton first edition evolved into countless samples and after receiving hundreds and thousands of comments from both kids and parents we ended up with the final version. And almost instantly, it became a hit!

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BALACLAVAS

Breden’s balaclavas are always evolving. For example, the original classic double-cotton balaclava BREDEN also has a peaked “brother” – hat-scarf BENT. They have merino-lined siblings like a merino-lined hat-scarf BREM and thick winter hat-scarf CLAVAN, who also both have peaked alternatives called MORRIS and CLARK. It’s like a little universe!

If all these names (BREDEN, BENT, BREM…) seem a bit confusing at first, fear not! Like all new things, the world of our headwear also needs a little getting used to. Keep in mind these simple tips-tricks:

  • Take care of your balaclava properly, as different versions of it need different care. In short: all hat-scarves with merino wool linings require cool washing temperature, a gentle program and the lowest possible spin speed. 400 spins is always best! Also, make sure to re-shape all hat-scarves right after removing it from the washing machine.
  • Be sure to measure your child’s head circumference correctly, because if the balaclava is too big, it will fall on the eyes and wind will freeze your kid’s ears and neck. A small balaclava also leaves ears bare while also being tight and uncomfortable.
